We reached out to dozens of organizations to find out what kinds of opportunities are available for gap year and college-aged students. Those who we know have opportunities are listed up top, subcategorized by their central issue (recognizing that they may work in other areas as well).

Climate Change/ Environment 

Sunrise Movement
Mission: We're building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.

Defend Our Future
Mission: Defend Our Future, a project of the Environmental Defense Fund, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to empowering young people of all political persuasions who are interested in advancing climate change and clean energy solutions that grow our economy and protect the world for future generations.

Alliance for Climate Education
Mission: We educate young people on the science of climate change and empower them to take action.

Greening Forward
Mission: Greening Forward establishes, engages, and empowers a diverse global green movement of people for the protection of the environment powered by young people. It is our goal to develop as many leaders as possible from a wide range of backgrounds.

The Environmental Voter Project
Mission: The Environmental Voter Project aims to significantly increase voter demand for environmental leadership by identifying inactive environmentalists and then turning them into consistent activists and voters.
Location: Boston, MA

League of Conservation Voters
Mission: The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national, state and local priorities. LCV, as part of the Conservation Voter Movement along with our state LCV partners, advocates for sound environmental laws and policies, holds elected officials accountable for their votes and actions, and elects pro-environment candidates who will champion our priority issues.

Get Out the Vote/ Civic Engagement 


Organizing Corps 2020
Mission: Organizing Corps 2020 will help build the grassroots infrastructure needed to defeat Donald Trump, while investing in the next generation of Democratic leaders — focusing on students from communities of color who have been traditionally underrepresented among political campaign staff. This program recruits and trains students expecting to graduate by June 2020 and place them as field organizers in key states.
Locations:  Arizona, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia
Opportunities: Bootcamps and Trainings that lead to paid canvassing positions in 2020

Note: Gap year applicants are encouraged to contact the organization to explore the possibility of getting involved. Organizing Corps 2020 is the best onramp to a full-time paid position on the presidential campaign through November 3, 2020

Rock the Vote
Mission: Rock the Vote is a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to building the political power of young people.

Next Gen Politics
Mission: to provide information and tools to enable our nation’s youth to fulfill their obligations as citizens and develop into an empowered, politically informed, and socially aware generation.

Vote Smart
Mission: Vote Smart's mission is to provide free, factual, unbiased information on candidates and elected officials to ALL Americans. Vote Smart recruits interns and volunteers who are able to set aside personal ideology in order to serve the interests of all Americans.

Swing Left
Mission: Swing Left is a progressive political group in the United States that was created following the election of Donald Trump in 2016. The group was founded to create an easier way for Democrats to volunteer in their nearest swing district.

Headcount
Mission: HeadCount is a non-partisan organization that uses the power of music to register voters and promote participation in democracy. We reach young people and music fans where they already are – at concerts and online – to inform and empower.

Run for Something
Mission: Run for Something is a progressive American political organization dedicated to recruiting and supporting young candidates running for down-ballot office.

Democratic National Committee
Mission: The Democratic National Committee is committed to taking back the White House in 2020 and electing Democrats at every level — from the school board to the Oval Office.

Mission: The DCCC supports Democratic House candidates every step of the way to fortify and expand our new Democratic Majority

Mission: EMILY’s List is committed to driving progressive change throughout our country by winning elections that put pro-choice Democratic women into office.

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)
Mission: AADP is a convener, connector, and catalyst for change, increasing the political and economic power of people with disabilities. AAPD will advocate for policies that allow people with disabilities to fully participate in the political process. This includes ensuring the accessibility of polling locations and promoting the availability of accessible voting technology.

Mi Famillia Vota
Mission: Our work in engaging Latino communities and building partnerships is guided by the “7 Patas” or 7 pillars model of community engagement. Under this model, MFV works with schools, local networks of businesses, faith organizations, media outlets, community organizations, local consulates of immigrant-sending countries, and labor unions in order to maximize our reach and impact.

Mission: New Era is the leading voice for young people in Colorado politics and one of the most effective youth civic engagement organizations in the country. Young People For
Mission: Young People For (YP4) is a social justice incubator. We provide life-long social justice leadership training to unlock the potential of young people historically left out of opportunity. We are a national network that centers black, brown, indigenous, disabled, and LGBTQ+ leaders in education, media, politics, business, government, and everywhere.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
Mission: The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 and is our nation's guardian of liberty. The ACLU works in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

Mission: The Black Lives Matter Global Network is a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.

Gun Reform

Alliance for Gun Responsibility
Mission: The Alliance for Gun Responsibility works to end the gun violence crisis in our community and to promote a culture of gun ownership that balances rights with responsibilities. Through collaboration with experts, civic leaders, and citizens, we work to find evidence-based solutions to the crisis of gun violence in our community. We create innovative policy, advocate for changes in laws, and promote community education to reduce gun violence.

Campus Election Engagement Project (CEEP) 
Mission: CEEP is a national non-partisan project that helps America’s colleges and universities get as many of their 20 million students as possible to register, volunteer in campaigns, educate themselves, and turn out at the polls. We teach administrators, faculty, staff, and student leaders to use their institutional resources to engage students.

Mission: 22×20 is a groundbreaking national campaign that supports youth, building nonpartisan media literacy skills to interpret, critique, and respond to political messages as a critical step towards engagement.

Census 2020
The Census Bureau is aiming to hire close to 500,000 office and field staff nationally for the 2020 Census. The majority of those hires will be Census takers (also referred to as enumerators). In the state of California, that can mean as many as 55,000 people. In New York City, the Census Bureau might need to hire close to 13,000 people.
